INTRODUCTION
For many generations the sport of cricket has been played in the village of Evenley. In past years the cricket square was situated within the land of Rectory Farm. Today this is now a small housing development called Church Leys, which was built in the 1970s. Cricket has since moved to be played on the village green, which now has an excellent reputation as one of the best wickets within the South Northamptonshire leagues.
THE STRUCTURE OF E.C.C
Evenley Cricket Club is organised by its own management committee, which comprises playing and non-playing members of the club. They meet on a monthly basis to have informal discussions about topical issues, which range from sponsorship, fund raising and social events through to more tactical discussions about selection and organisation of the club.
THE TEAMS
Evenley has two cricket teams, each playing within one of South Northamptonshire’s five leagues.
The First eleven gained promotion from Division 1 to the Premier Division in the 2023 season.
The Second Eleven gained promotion from Division 3 to Division 2 in the 2023 season.
The standard of cricket is high as far as village cricket is concerned, and is most certainly competitive, throughout the divisions.
The teams enjoy a great social scene, gathering for a drink with the villagers after the game in the local pub, The Red Lion. There is also a very active junior section.
JUNIOR SECTION
We provide ECB All Stars and Dynamos coaching sessions on Sunday mornings throughout May, June and July. These are eight week courses based on a syllabus set out by the ECB, who also run the bookings system centrally, and are aimed at 5-8 year olds (All Stars) and 8-11 year olds (Dynamos). Coaching takes place on Evenley Village Green from 11am – 12noon and the courses must be pre-booked. We also take teams to participate in occasional Friday evening softball tournaments organised by the South Northants Junior Cricket League throughout the season. We are always on the lookout for additional volunteers to help with coaching and would like to enter a team into the SNJCL Under 13 league to provide continuity for our older Dynamos.
THE MATCHES
All matches played are based on limited over cricket, the first team playing 45 Over matches, the second and third teams playing 40 Over matches. Usually fixtures are arranged so that each of the first and second eleven teams takes it in turn to play a home fixture on Evenley Village Green, the third eleven now playing their home games at Aynho Sports Ground, Aynho. Most opposition comes from the local surrounding villages, although this does encompass the odd village from slightly further afield, who are attracted to the well organised South Northants League. Teas are part of the match fee, which are held in The Red Lion Evenley & the pavilion at Aynho Sports Ground.
Most matches (weather permitting) are well supported by the village, so please come along and support the teams whenever you can. The pub is always open on a Saturday afternoon. Matches start at 1.30pm for the premier division & 2.00pm for the other divisions
MEMBERSHIP
The club is always on the lookout for new members. This is in both a playing and non-playing capacity, and is open to both male and females of all ages. You can have an involvement in the club of some description, small or large. Every year there is an A.G.M held in the village hall in February, which is open to anyone and everyone.
For those who are keen to be involved in an active way, there are several options. The club is always looking for players and new committee members, male or female. In addition the club is seeking scorer's and regular umpires.
For those of you who would prefer to support in a less involved manner, there is the opportunity to sponsor a match ball, become a Vice President of the club, or support our regular social events ranging from BBQ's to the end of season dinner & dance. Spectators are always welcome to cheer us on a Saturday afternoon at Evenley & Aynho.
Commercially, if you have a business or venture you would like to advertise, you are welcome to take advertising space, for a small fee in the Fixtures booklet delivered throughout the village, pre-season and on the web site evenleycc.com
