Summary of Season
Summary of Season 2009
Overview
Overview
- A new first team captain this season. Taken over from Julian, which are very large boots to fill ( and cricket whites).
- A very strong season that ultimately ended in disappointment.
- Priors dropped out of the league 2 weeks before the start of the season meaning that all remaining teams had two byes in the season where they did not score any points – this was to proof significant in the outcome of the league.
- Two horse race from the start of the season – standard in general was poor from the rest of the teams.
- Some excellent cricket played by the team and in particular the bowlers. We only conceded more than 150 runs in an innings on four occasions. The ball certainly dominated the bat with pitches regularly being bowler friendly.
- The league title went down to the final game of the season, where unfortunately we fell just two points short of Byfield (who were worthy winners) and ended the season in second place although we only lost one game in the whole season.
- The first teams impressive record this season was:
- Played 15 Won 13 Lost 1 Drew 1
Highlights
- First game of the season against newly promoted Radway – Dave H 94 and Jamie M 71 N/O on his return to the first team.
- Vital partnership of 120 between Alex Romaine (68 N/O) and Altaf Hussain (63 N/O) when we were struggling at 35 for 3 chasing 140.
- Turning over Byfield in the first big game of the season. Ant Romaine 71.
- Bowling out the joint leaders at the time for 31 and the game finished before tea time. Martin Russell with astonishing figures of 12 overs 10 maidens 6 wkts for 3 runs.
- Talib Ali’s devastating match winning figures of 7-35 against Radway
- Ant Romaine’s demolition of Fenny Compton – smashing children, old men and local wild life all over the ground.
Summary
- Very positive season and the boys should be proud of themselves.
- The reality was that we only lost the league due to Priors dropping out of the league at the 11th hour.
- Hope to bounce back next season and take the title of Byfield who have had it for far too long
- Bright future for the club – 3 teams playing on a weekend
Thank you’
- Jim Walker – scorer
- Tim – Umpire
- The cricket tea ladies
- Steve H/ Ben G/ Scotty and Andy R for all their support in my first season and making everything run smoothly
Awards
Batting Award Anthony Romaine (446 runs at an average of 44.6)
Bowling Award Martin Russell (34 wickets at an average of 9.14 – Talib only missed out as he took 34 wickets but his average was 11.23
Champagne Moment John Russell’s catch against Marston St Lawrence – the ball was skied in the air – came down with snow on it – the ground was bumpy under foot and he plucked the catch.
